BOARDING CENTER MANAGEMENT Doctor Indonesian Children (IDAI) emphasizes that consumption antibiotics must be based on a doctor’s prescription to prevent antimicrobial resistance.
“(The use of) antibiotics must have a doctor’s prescription,” emphasized the Head of the IDAI Tropical Disease Infection Coordination Work Unit, Prof. Edi Hartoyo, quoted Thursday (12/12).
Antibiotics, explained Edi, are given to pediatric patients who suffer from diseases caused by bacteria, not viruses, parasites or fungi.
Improper use of antibiotics can cause resistant or resistant bacteria so that the patient requires a dose drug more or take longer to recover from the disease.
Antibiotics work in various ways to eliminate bacteria, for example destroying cell walls or inhibiting protein formation in bacteria.
When giving antibiotics, the doctor will consider several things such as the bacteria causing the disease and what organs are being attacked
the bacteria.
Therefore, antibiotics can be given to patients in different types and doses according to the disease the child is suffering from.
For example, the antibiotic medication given to a child who has a cough and cold will be different from a child who is exposed to bacteria that cause pneumonia.
Improper use of antibiotics, whether in terms of type, dosage or other things, can cause antimicrobial resistance. Sensitive bacteria will die when exposed to antibiotics, but resistant bacteria will survive.
Resistant bacteria can be transmitted to other children, for example through droplets when coughing, so that the child will also experience microbial resistance.
Edi reminded parents to consult a doctor if they feel their child needs to take antibiotics and not to give them to their children without a doctor’s prescription.
The doctor will examine and consider whether the child needs to take antibiotics to recover.
