Minister of Home Affairs (Minister of Home Affairs) Tito Karnavian agreed that the plan that had emerged regarding holding regional head elections (pilkada) could be carried out and represented through the regional people’s representative council (DPRD).
According to him, learning from holding the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada, there are large costs that must be incurred in this direct democratic party and can actually be done through other democratic mechanisms.
“I agree of course, we will see for ourselves how big the costs for regional elections are. Not to mention there are several areas where we see violence, I have always said that regional elections are asymmetrical, one of which is through the DPRD, right,” said Tito at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Today.
Even though he agreed that the regional election proposal would be better held in the DPRD, he said that the proposal needed study, including under his ministry.
The Minister of Home Affairs is still waiting for other studies from various parties, such as the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) and academics.
Tito further promised that the proposed regional elections in the DPRD would be discussed seriously under his ministry considering that the regulations regarding regional head elections have been included in the 2025 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).
“We will definitely discuss it. One of them is already in Prolegnas. In Prolegnas, if I’m not mistaken, it includes the Election Law and Regional Election Law,” he said. (Ant/P-2)
