ANTICIPATING extreme weather, the Central Java Provincial Government asked for assistance from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to carry out weather modification.
Monitoring by Indonesian Media until Sunday (15/12) more than a week of extreme weather continued to occur in dozens of areas in Central Java. This condition results in hydrometeorological disasters such as landslides, floods and hurricanes. This condition must receive special attention from regional, provincial and central governments to prevent it as early as possible.
According to BMKG, extreme weather in a number of areas in Central Java is predicted to continue until next Monday (23/12), so anticipatory steps are being taken Central Java Provincial Government. “We have asked for help from TMC (Weather Modification Technology), BMKG and BNPB to carry out weather modifications,” said Acting Governor of Central Java Nana Sudjana.
According to Nana Sudjana, weather modification measures are expected to solve the problem of extreme weather which is expected to occur in a number of areas in the next few days, because the government does not want a repeat of the flood disaster in Demak and Grobogan last year. “Don’t let there be victims as a result of the disaster,” he added.
Apart from asking for help with weather modification, continued Nana, the Central Java Provincial Government has tried to anticipate by taking several steps such as ensuring the readiness of volunteers through a standby call held by the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Central Java Province some time ago.
Another step, continued Nana, is to ensure the condition of the equipment used when facing disasters, and to coordinate with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), so that this step is expected to reduce the impact of disasters when extreme weather strikes.
Previously, the Head of BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati, revealed that the potential for extreme disasters was expected to continue in a number of areas in Central Java on December 16-23, so we asked for vigilance and anticipation as early as possible of the impact of hydrometeorological disasters that might arise.
“We specifically came to Semarang, because the escalation of extreme weather in a number of areas in Central Java is getting stronger, so we need to anticipate the impact as early as possible,” said Dwikorita in Semarang some time ago.
Apart from strengthening river embankments, said Dwikorita, BMKG emphasized the importance of further coordination with local river basin offices to prevent potential flooding. “We ask residents to increase awareness of the threat of disaster as a result of extreme weather,” he added. (N-2)
