ONE of the online learning platforms Coursera announced annual learning trends for Indonesia based on data from more than 1.9 million registered learners.
This report highlights the enthusiasm and commitment of Indonesian learners in improving their skills to remain competitive in the rapidly developing global world of work.
Apart from that, this report also reveals two main trends that will become the center of attention in 2024, namely the increasing interest in learning GenAI and the high demand for content specifically designed to help students prepare for specific jobs.
According to Microsoft’s Work Trend Index 2024, artificial intelligence (AI) skills have become a top priority for leaders in Indonesia in recruiting with 69% stating that they will not hire candidates who do not have AI skills, regardless of other skills.
In addition, as many as 76% tend to prefer candidates with less experience but who are skilled in using AI, rather than candidates who have more experience but without AI skills.
This trend is reflected in Coursera data, which shows that by 2024, someone in Asia Pacific will enroll in course GenAI every 2 minutes. This data confirms that AI has become a mandatory skill for professionals in various industries.
The increasing interest in GenAI learning in Indonesia reflects global and Asia Pacific trends.
In 2024, Coursera recorded an increase in GenAI enrollment in Indonesia of 330%, driven by courses such as Google AI Essentials, Generative AI for Everyone and Generative AI: Introduction and Applications.
While basic GenAI courses remain popular, the focus is now shifting to applying GenAI in the workplace, indicating a maturing interest in the practical application of the technology.
Foreign languages have also become a trend in Indonesia. Courses such as First Step Korean and English for Career Development remain popular among students looking to improve their professional communication skills and pursue their interest in foreign languages.
Entry-level Professional Certificates, which do not require prior experience or a college degree, are also increasingly in demand. As many as 30% of the most popular courses such as Google’s Foundations: Data, Data, Everywhere, and Foundations of Project Management are part of this program.
“Indonesian learners embrace the future of work in 2024, prioritizing GenAI and skills that match job requirements to remain competitive in an ever-evolving job market. This move shows their resilience, adaptability and drive to lead at the global level,” said Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Coursera Raghav Gupta.
“We estimate that by 2025, the global competition towards AI literacy will accelerate, and we remain committed to empowering Indonesian learners with accessible and transformative education to achieve success in an AI-driven world,” he concluded.
