IN commemoration of International Disability Day, Media Indonesia held an inspiring workshop entitled Let Your Hands Do the Talking.
This event is part of Equal and Empowered festivalaims to provide education and direct experience to the audience present about the importance of understanding Sign language as a means of inclusive communication.
The workshop, which was mostly attended by parents of children with special needs, featured Rachmita Harahap, Commissioner of the National Commission on Disabilities (KND), as the main speaker.
In her presentation, Rachmita, who used sign language, explained the ethics of communicating with deaf friends. He was accompanied by Putri as a sign language interpreter who helped bridge communication with the audience present.
One of the sessions that attracted attention was the direct practice of BISINDO sign language (Indonesian Sign Language).
This session invites the audience present to learn the alphabet from A to Z, as well as how to introduce yourself by saying your name using sign language.
Not only that, the guests who attended were also trained to express emotions and feelings such as happy, sad, angry, sweet or spicy using hand movements and facial expressions.
“Sign language is not only about hand movements, but also involves clear facial expressions,” said Rachmita using sign language which was translated by Putri on (11/12) at Lobby 3 Media Indonesia, Kedoya, West Jakarta.
He emphasized the importance of eye contact and a direct face-to-face attitude when talking to deaf friends.
“A minimum distance of one meter is highly recommended so that communication remains comfortable,” he added.
Ethics of communicating with deaf friends
Furthermore, in this workshop participants also received simple tips for interacting with deaf friends. Rachmita explained the “3S” concept that can be applied when meeting people with hearing disabilities, including:
1. Touch: If you want to start a conversation, gently touch a deaf friend’s shoulder or arm.
2. Greeting: Use a friendly hand gesture or wave to attract attention.
3. Greet: Make sure you speak with clear lip movements and don’t rush. If you still find it difficult to understand each other, use writing or a text-to-text application to make communication easier.
In addition, participants are reminded not to talk while smoking, chewing, or covering their faces with a mask, because this can prevent deaf friends from reading lip movements.
Then, the series of events ended with an interactive game session using sign language, which succeeded in creating a fun learning atmosphere while strengthening empathy between the audience present.
“I’m really grateful that there is a workshop like this because it helps me and the parents who attended to understand sign language. Indirectly, we also learn to communicate, and show respect and care for children people with disabilities,” said Rini, one of the parents of a child with intellectual disabilities who also attended the Equal and Empowered festival.
For additional information, the Equal and Empowered festival will be held for two days from 11-12 December 2024, presenting various activities that highlight the creativity and abilities of people with disabilities.
On the second day, this festival will be enlivened with a special opera, distribution of door prizes, and a talk show entitled “Mutual Support for Equality”, which will present Erick Tohir, as Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) as a resource person, not forgetting a number of other important guests who will also be present. also present.
Not to forget, this activity involved 24 tenants who displayed various works, ranging from creative products to food prepared by people with disabilities.
