HEAD of intelligence and military Israel met with Egyptian officials in Cairo for urgent talks on regional stability following the government’s overthrow Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
The meeting, reportedly attended by Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, took place on the same day that Israeli forces launched an operation, Bashan Arrow, seizing territory and attacking military infrastructure across Syria.
According to Maariv, the meeting, which initially focused on a possible hostage deal in Gaza Strip, Palestinewas asked by Egyptian officials to discuss the regional threat posed by events in Syria.
Avi Ashkenazi, Maariv’s military correspondent, said, “The concerns are twofold. On the one hand, Muslim Brotherhood may try to exploit the problems in Syria to re-influence the situation in Egypt as well as on the other side, Iran may try to inflame the region and try to take over Jordan or endanger the Middle East.”
In response, Israel increased security measures along its border with Jordan, including a new fence and military units for the eastern border. Concerns have also been raised that Syria’s collapse could encourage activism in Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain. (MEE/Z-2)
