Culturally Speaking #22 By Sarah Stodola --------------------------------------- According to Tuesday's Wall Street Journal, 60% of U.S. corporations paid no federal taxes from 1996-2000. These were the years of the booming economy, when profits were through the roof for the vast majority of these companies. * * * After promoting myself last week, this week I am going to promote the other Me Three editor: Please read Mark Grueter's essay on Hunter S. Thompson in Canon Magazine. * * * Even though this is probably a case of a paper publishing a gracious article in order to appear as if not threatened by the competition, the New York Times' coverage of the Pulitzer Prizes was still quite gracious, given that it only won one prize to the LA Times' five and the Wall Street Journal's two. Read this article on Slate regarding the true significance of the Pulitzer. * * * Click here for info on Lee Klein's new novel. * * * The reading room at the British Museum in London, as spectacular and historically significant it is, ought not allow tourists to wander its aisles, giggling and snapping pictures and such. I do remember that putting a bit of a damper on the whole experience. * * * Must read: article in this month's Atlantic Monthly titled "The Case Against Perfection." It's an utterly fascinating look at the moral implications of genetic engineering. * * * Salon features a good essay from one of Condoleezza Rice's old mentors at the University of Denver who says Condi is now being dishonest in order to cover up for Bush. Sit through the fifteen-second commerical for the free Day Pass - it's worth it.
