A problem most people would like to have...

Dead-on essay by Whitney Pastorek about bloggers and their attempts to rule the world (Whitney, this is NOT a blog. It is a weekly column. Just for the record).

Linguistically speaking, it is very interesting that alcoholic drinks are called "spirits."  It is presumably because they supply high spirits, or lift spirits, but there are so many potential interpretations.  Maybe they kill bad spirits, or maybe they are good spirits that make you feel better when you are down.

So pretty much every president is a distant relative of every other president. It seems weird, but then it makes me wonder - are we all each other's 10th cousins?

A list of things that aren't right:

-That literary types think it's good to be bad at math.
-That sometimes, actually, words speak louder than actions.
-That you can buy respect.
-That I don't get along with music nerds as well as I feel like I should.
-That pop culture is sometimes considered a valid topic of intellectual interpretation, and it's usually the bad pop culture that gets discussed as such.
-That lists are more readable these days than essays.
-That Ewen McGregor is so so hot and so so inaccessible.
-That Solipsism earns fans.

The documentary 7th Street is not a very good film.  But if you have an interest in seeing how a Manhattan neighborhood transformed from ghetto to artist enclave to gentrified, it's worth a watch anyway.
