Culturally Speaking #20 By Sarah Stodola --------------------------------------- The prison population has doubled under Bush. Way to fight crime, you moron... * * * Wow, more evidence of how brutal the publishing world is . Note to Self: Do not give up writing endeavors and settle for the other side of the industry. * * * Poor, poor poets, they get no love. * * * As if NCAA tournament pools were not addicting enough, this year my pool has its own webpage, so I can constantly monitor the whole thing from my computer at work! Unfortunately, I also know that after the first day I am not in the top ten. * * * The first ever annual awards for online fiction writing. Eyeshot, Pindeldyboz, and Eclectica cleaned up. * * * A grad school peer of mine made the comment the other night that music is strangely absent from curriculums when it comes to studying the humanities. The more I think about it, the more I realize how surprisingly true that observation is. We study literature and visual arts and film and to a lesser extent theater in an academic setting, but music is studied only in music programs and not in the humanities in general. * * * Oooh, a whole great big book on the early days of Manhattan!! I can't wait to get my hands on it. * * * Those SPAM emails you always get offering college degrees for sale have somehow actually become really big business, and a really big problem for employers trying to verify info on the resumes of new hires... * * * That's it, I'm off to wine country.
