Culturally Speaking #37

By Sarah Stodola

-------------------------------------

Last week's downpour in New York City is old news by now (especially since it seem there is a likely a new downpour on its way), but still, here are some interesting statistics from it...

* * *

This is an interesting take on how presidential candidates use their war records as points of self-promotion.  If recent history is any indication, Kerry better start talking about other things, and fast.

* * *

The best photo on this page is the second one, of Astor Place in the 1940s (and maybe a couple of others).

* * *

Previously unpublished short story by Truman Capote, discovered recently in the New York Public Library's archives, tucked in with a bunch of his other random papers and notes. It's quite good.

* * *

Yes, whether they like it or not, the Kerry camp needs to shift into attack mode. And Bush's failure to capture Bin Laden is an obvious topic. It's time we stop letting Bush's campaignists claim that we are winning the "war on terror" because we got Saddam Hussein, when the truth is that we may be losing it because we can't get Bin Laden.

* * *

Republicans reveal through their words just how ill-willed they can be...

Chart of the wounded in Iraq courtesy of MyDD (scroll down).  I'm not sure where the data here originally came from, but if it's accurate, well, goodness...

* * *

And on a graver note: Just what is it, just exactly, that makes it take so long to get drugs at the pharmacy?  They have all the drugs back there, and yet one regularly must wait at least an hour before one may pick up the drugs.  Anyone know?
