Culturally Speaking #57: A Lot to Say About Just a Few Things

By Sarah Stodola

I now know that the easiest thing to read in Spanish is a fashion magazine.  I feel like I'm freaking fluent when I pick up one of those.

The McDonald's in central Moscow serves 30,000 customers a day.  Please, explain this to me.  I just don't understand...

More on this soon, but Me Three is now accepting submissions for the second volume of its print journal.  Send submissions of fiction, nonfiction, nonfiction posing as fiction, fiction passing as nonfiction, poetry prose posing as poetry (but not just poetry, please), artwork, and/or queries to printsubmissions at methree dot net.  We are hoping that folks will keep things under or near to 3000 words.  Also keep in mind that we are very keen on publishing a number of short pieces, i.e. under 500 words.

The 2006 budget is being tussled over in Congress at the moment.  Appallingly, both the Senate and House are eager to give Bush even more tax cuts than he asked for.  There is a bright side, though...while the House is also prepared to deny medical care for the unrich elderly, it seems that some Senators do actually have a conscience, as they refuse to cut Medicaid funding...

The thing I really like about the book blog Beatrice is that Ron, the very nice, very tall guy who runs it, goes to every single literary event in the city so I don't have to...

This essay in Mother Jones asks the very good following question: "If the U.S. government doesn't plan to occupy Iraq for any longer than necessary, why is it spending billions of dollars to build "enduring" bases?"

I didn't actually read this book review because I am to caught up in the fact that there is a novelist with the surname "Prose."  That's sooo George McGovern.  Do we think it is her real name?

A nice piece about Kerouac and his "fistfuls of Benzedrine."
