This week the Supreme Court upheld the new campaign finance law, which is a great step, but from what I understand all this law means is that Congress can impose limitations on campaign finance if it so chooses. So now I guess Congress just needs to so choose, big time.

"A weekly survey of world restrictions on freedom and free trade" called Globophobia. I love it. Although, I must qualify this by stating that the more I learn, the more I realize I'm not actually anti-globalization. I just think it needs to be approached differently.

Elliot Spitzer just may be the savior of everyone in the world who's not a Wall Street insider. He has just about single-handedly exposed the incestuous mess that is big business in this country.

Things
are looking up for New Yorkers. Maybe I had perfect timing, after
all, in spending these two years in grad school. The recession meant low
interest rates on student loans, and coming out of a recession just when
I'm finishing up will mean that the fun jobs might be back. Maybe.

I don't know quite what to think of Jim Crace in this interview. Regardless, he's right on about the insignificance of facts in winning an argument or making a point.

I'm researching W. Somerset Maugham for a paper at the moment, and I'm amazed at how little serious attention has been paid to him in literary and academic circles. He's one of the most popular literary authors ever, but you would never know it by searching for articles on him at the NYU library. I guess this means I'm gonna have to actually think for myself with this paper.
