Speaking #33: By Sarah Stodola ------------------------------------- This could just be a result of oversensitiveness, but is it really just a coincidence that Dave Eggers decided to devote an entire issue of McSweeney's to this graphic literature nonsense, and just about the time it comes out, some major news outlets start predicting the fall of the literary novel as the graphic novel is going take preeminence, and then Neal Pollack decides he is going to publish a graphic novel about 1840s New York? * * * I haven't linked to this guy in a long time, which is my own oversight... * * * The worst case scenario in Iraq may be imminent. * * * Kiki and Herb are leaving us? If it's really true, I'll be mourning for a full three months this winter by playing "Total Eclipse of the Heart" on repeat and donning a black lounge singer dress. * * * Note to International Travelers: Air France does not fly direct between New York and London, and neither do any of its partners. In addition, they don't actually have that many flights between Paris and New York, either. So basically, if you decide to do the New York to London via Paris thing, and you miss the first leg of the trip for some reason (and these reasons include airline imposed delays), you are very likely to be completely screwed. I guess this isn't so much cultural. It's personal. * * * America's most literate cities, not judged by how many people can read, but by how many people do... * * * During the Republican Convention, there are going to be a million other things to do in the city, all with the purpose of drawing attention away from the Republicans. This is an ingenious form of protest. * * * Interesting very short story... * * * Please tell everyone you know who's ever said anything clever to enter out satire contest.
