Culturally Speaking #11

Last week, Me Three posted its Top Ten Albums of 2003 list.  And I realize that the list includes only a very limited sampling from the very large spectrum of music available in the world.  So I went looking for a list of top ten classical albums from this year, just because I like classical music, and so far I've come up empty.  So please, if anyone knows of a top ten list in a genre other than rock, please let me know about it.

Okay, so Kant was one of the forefathers of the Enlightenment, and according to him it would be through the application of Reason that the human species would achieve a harmonious existence. Eventually, there would be a Universal that everyone would live according to. So my question is this: Couldn't Mass Culture - so condemned by the intellectual set - actually be an indication of this Universal? No one ever said it was going to be supreme or anything, after all...

My company has decided to give me an extra week of vacation time next year. I know I've been good this year, but this is beyond my wildest expectations. I feel like I've died and gone to Europe...

According to one of my professors (who is very smart and to be believed about such things), American accents today are more similar to the British accents of Elizabethan times than the British accent of today is. It seems that Americans, in separating themselves from the Continent, somehow became a linguistic island, isolated from corruption. And so it's true; American accents represent pure English, British accents do not.  Ha ha.

I have decided that it is quite possible that watching morning shows actually makes people dumber. And yes, I know that I used to intern at the Today Show.

All this We Got Saddam crap...Doesn't everyone realize that this is not the ultimate goal? The ultimate goal is supposed to be to get Osama Bin Laden. All the rest of this is just a distraction.

I won't be in town to go see Kiki and Herb at Bowery Ballroom next week. But if you are around you should go. Really, they're brilliant.

This is the first time I have ever been working at a really corporate place during the Christmas season, and I must say that the "Come to the Holiday Party and I'll buy you a drink" joke is only kind of funny the first time you hear it. It has now been told to me, no exaggeration, at least 25 times. Not funny anymore.
